Applicants under Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) are assessed against a point score system based on the individual's eligibility.

Through this program, the New Zealand Immigration Department aims to target migrants with specific skills to meet the needs of the New Zealand economy, workforce and on maintaining control over skilled migration members.

The first step when applying under SMC to migrate to New Zealand is to register an Expression of Interest (EOI). Prospective skilled migrants must be under 56 years old, obtain at least 100 pts score and meet the health, character and English language requirement to qualify for an EOI.
